In a survey conducted by the agency and the portal Sopi yabiladi.com, 74% of MRE continue to have an emotional and cultural attachment with Morocco.
Apart from transfers (DH 10.597 billion since the beginning of 2009) which showed a decrease of 14.3% over the same period last year due to global crisis, 62% of MRE continue to keep strong links with their country of origin. This is the conclusion of an investigation conducted jointly by the communication agency Sopi and portal yabiladi.com, whose results were released on 28 May at the annual conference “Migration Morocco” organized by the two authors of investigation and the magazine Le Courrier de l’Atlas. The survey was conducted via the Internet between March and April 2009 and has affected 754 people (38% women and 62% men) with a large majority in France (71.6%), Belgium (8%) , Canada (4%), and the United States (3%). Although experiencing a significant sociological change over previous generations in terms of integration in host countries (that is the case of MRE Spain and Italy that integrate more quickly), the Moroccan abroad continue to keep a strong link with the family. But the anchor is the double standard, the survey reveals the MRE continue to financially assist their families in the country of origin, but come quickly to integrate the economic and political environment in host countries. “The solidarity remains at the heart of the structure of transfers,” says the survey (other investigations have already pointed out: 53% support their families in Morocco), 15% acquire property, there are 15% of savings, and only 2% to invest. Morocco, for the MRE, is primarily (74%) a cultural and emotional attachment, a family obligation (15%), a potential investment (6%), a country like any other (5%). While complaining of some problems that are blocking their projects, such as corruption (75%) and administrative problems (54%), 56% of Moroccans abroad to see a project in Morocco in the future, but 12% only to manage a project. The global crisis is not the only one that inhibits this potential, the MRE in this investigation provide some of the criticisms against operators who do not this attachment of Moroccans to their country of origin. The ferry is expensive for them and has increased by 30% in 2008, and for telephone communications and some tour operators who sell expensive product, according to respondents. Despite these obstacles, the MRE continue to love their country, stressed the investigation. And they continue to love him, he would just as bankers and the Moroccan State, crisis or not, make efforts to maintain this love.
